Located at the intersection of West Nittany Avenue and Fraser Street, Memorial Field is a 4,000-seat outdoor competition venue that hosts the State College Area School District’s athletic programs including football, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse programs.
The total renovation project bid of $2.3 million includes the original base bid of $2.25 million, which will replace the bleachers, wall and fencing along the entire west side of the stadium. It will also add ADA seating and access to the bleacher assembly, and the first alternate ($2,437) which substitutes the specified concrete sidewalk along Fraser Street with a brick sidewalk.
In addition, the second alternate ($89,650) was also approved, adding a second drainage pipe from Fraser Street to the sinkhole. The new design moves water to the sinkhole more quickly.
Construction will take place through the spring and summer, with completion date scheduled for August 2013. Renovation will allow the bleachers to be fully reopened for use for the first time since 2008, when a section was closed for safety reasons. The artificial surface is expected to be replaced after the completion of the bleacher renovation.
The low base bid came in from Mid-State Construction Inc., at $2.26 million, which covers the replacement of the west side bleachers, retaining wall along Fraser Street and gives handicap accessibility to the remodeled area.
