The renovation programme has been divided into three different areas such as Spatial Needs – which encompass the necessary additional classrooms, administrative offices and other facilities; Facility Needs – which include the required maintenance and capital improvements to existing facilities and infrastructure; and the Site Work – which consists of sports fields, playgrounds, pick-up and drop-off loops, driveways, and parking areas.
Performing various renovations throughout the district, the projects will construct additions to both South Side High School and Watson Elementary School. The renovation work also includes the roof maintenance work, masonry reconstruction, building code upgrades, floor repairs, band and chorus room renovations, installation of security cameras, a boiler replacement, and other necessary building systems work.
The main renovation work of the project includes the expansion of South Side High School to replace 12 classrooms in portable trailers and converted garages. In order to improve security, classroom space will be moved inside, which will enable the district to lock the building and limit the entry to one door.
Apart from that the renovation also includes the construction of three new classrooms, small-group instruction space, and additional parking at Watson Elementary School; modernisation of South Side High School’s outdated science labs; upgrade of athletic facilities throughout the district; updation of music, theatre, and arts facilities throughout the district; and addressing structural and design deficiencies in the district’s buildings.
