According to the light replacement project, Skanska will install 11,000 more lamps to replace or upgrade all 89,000 streetlights in Surrey as part of one of the biggest roll-outs of new lamps in Britain. The new project has replaced the previous orange lighting scheme in Surrey.

The new lamps, which direct their beam downwards will reduce light pollution as well as save around £12 million ($18.43 million) over the next 25 years through a better contract deal and lower energy bills.

Each environment-friendly new lamp can be controlled by computer which means street lighting can be increased when it is needed and reduced when it is not. It will also cut carbon emissions.

New streetlights have been installed in most residential areas across Surrey and the project is expected to complete by March 2014.
