Located west of Manistique on US 2, the approximately $25 million Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital has replaced the previous hospital that was built in 1950. The building features an emergency room, two operating rooms, CT and MRI imaging centres.

Apart from that the new hospital also features 12 private in-patient rooms, a laboratory, a conference centre, a kitchen, cafeteria, and administrative and staff offices. Focusing on providing better outpatient services, the new hospital includes a larger parking lot.

In addition to the emergency and inpatient facilities, the new building is home to the SMH Rural Health Clinic, which offers patients access to six primary care physicians, as well as traveling specialists. Specialists include cardiologists, otolaryngologists, obstetricians, oncologists, ophthalmologists and podiatrists.

The new building also features a stone finish inside made from locally-quarried stone, improved handicapped accessibility, and increased patient privacy. Unlike the old building, the new building will be air conditioned.

Ground was broken on the facility in August 2011 and the hospital celebrated the ribbon cutting ceremony on 12 April 2013. Patients will be moved to the new building on 22 April 2013.
