Opened in October 2012, the Smith Clinic is named in honour of Lester and Sue Smith. Designed exclusively for outpatients requiring specialty care including oncology, neurology and dermatology, the Smith Clinic is Harris Health’s first outpatient specialty facility.

Accommodating the rising demand for outpatient care, the Smith Clinic is a five-storey, 172,000 square feet facility adjoining the eight-storey parking garage on the existing health system administration headquarters site.

Smith Clinic houses the majority of diagnostic and specialty clinics formerly located at Ben Taub Hospital. Featuring new diagnostic and treatment equipment, the clinic has been designed to accommodate roughly 74,000 patient visits per year.

The Smith Clinic houses J. Evans and Mary P. Attwell Radiation Therapy Center, Smith Breast Center, Smith Infusion Therapy Clinic, Smith Diagnostic Imaging Department and Smith Oncology Clinic as well as various other facilities providing specialised services.

Ensuring speedier diagnoses and enabling the staff to provide advanced patient-centric care, the project includes more than 100 examination rooms to treat 19 specialty areas, advanced in-house medical equipment, an on-site pharmacy with nine walk-up windows, a lab facility with nine draw stations, and comprehensive cancer services.

The clinic’s state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment includes three linear accelerators, PET-CT scanners and MRIs, as well as more traditional radiology equipment. To accommodate each group’s unique clinical needs, the facility includes four floors of modular specialty clinics.

Designed with an emphasis on patient comfort, the plan also includes concierge services and one-stop convenience that allows for better coordination of outpatient care.

Complementing the existing administration facility, the exterior design features a modern curtain wall entry that expresses the clinic’s progressive vision. Between the new and existing facilities, a central healing garden offers patients and visitors peaceful respite in a natural environment.
