SSOE, in conjunction with Toledo Public Schools (TPS) and the Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC), renovated the 1913-built facility to accomplish five primary objectives. These include preservation of the historic landmark in the Old West End of Toledo; recreation of a modern school in a timeless structure; maintaining TPS traditions in a building that has served as a teaching environment for nearly a century; employment of sustainable practices to meet or exceed LEED Silver certification requirements, and transformation of Jesup W. Scott High School back to its original grandeur.
Enhancing the building’s original features, the renovation involved replacement of damaged exterior building materials, installation of energy-efficient windows, and the use of lighting concepts that reflect period design and maximise natural light through the reclamation of original skylights and high ceilings.
Apart from that the renovation also included installation of new HVAC system, rerouting of electrical, security, and technology systems throughout the building. The school’s media centre and classrooms have been given a 21st century upgrade.
The Toledo Chapter of the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Annual Toledo Design Awards honors design excellence for public and private buildings as well as projects of distinction.
