The redevelopment of the theatre includes the reinstatement of a 30m fly tower at the back of the theatre, which was demolished some 40 years after the stage house burned down.
To support the theatre’s ambitions to create its own productions and provide a creative space for film, television and drama students from the University, the original building will be extended to offer a range of new facilities.
A new double-height studio theatre and television studio, each with its own control room, will be delivered. The redevelopment scheme also includes a flexible teaching space, music practice rooms, and office areas.
Removing the temporary structures set up following the fire in 1972, the project will significantly increase the theatre’s current capacity from 500 to 700 seats. An additional side entrance will be created to enhance accessibility for theatre goers and University staff and students.
The redevelopment project is scheduled for completion in summer 2014.
