The expansion will enable Maine Medical Center to perform complex procedures in a modern setting and easing overcrowding, along with offering enhanced services.
It will add 40,000-square-foot addition on top of the hospital’s Lower Bean Building, near the emergency department. Featuring five operating rooms, each room will span 650 square feet, which is bigger than the 400 square feet rooms built in 1984 and would provide additional space to doctors to perform cardiac surgeries. These will be known as “interventional rooms” that can house not only surgeries, but other services as needed, such as radiology and cardiac catheterization.
The expansion project will also include preparation and recovery areas on the Bean 2 rooftop; improved sterilization procedures and areas; and development of a cardiac hybrid operating room in the main surgical suite for advanced heart surgeries.
The project is scheduled to be complete by October 2014.
