Kingswood Academy is a four-storey secondary school in Bransholme, built under the Hull City Council’s £400m ($608.33m) Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.
The academy, designed by architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, was constructed by Morgan Sindall.
The building has been designed to have a profiled roof and largely-glazed south-western face.
Internally, the ground-floor features a series of open plan studios for group and independent learning.
The main staircase at the inner street simplifies circulation and, rises up through the central multi-storey atrium.
The academy includes media facilities, a recording studio, and science, fine art and technology facilities.
The theatre at the school is used for local community productions as well and features a dedicated ‘plaza’ entrance and box office.
The Kingswood Academy was completed in January 2013 and caters for 1,300 students and 128 staff.
“We are very proud of Kingswood Academy and are delighted that it has been recognised as one of the best new buildings in the country by the RIBA and one of only three projects in the Yorkshire region to win a national RIBA award,” said Paul Monaghan, director at Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.
