The four finalists include AFO (Atelier Big City, FSA architecture and L’ŒUF); BGLA and Coarchitecture; Chevalier Morales architectes and DMA architects; and Consortium Dan Hanganu architectes and Groupe A.

The competition calls for entries to complete renovate the existing Pierrefonds Public Library building and extend it by 2,316 m2.

The new facility will integrate new technologies, and house a radio-frequency identification system to facilitate documents management and offer self-service loans and returns.

It will also target LEED Gold certification by incorporating sustainable development.

The selected finalists will now be asked to produce a sketch / concept.

The jury will select the winning design on 24 September, with the winner to be announced at a public ceremony in October 2013.

The ministère de la Culture et des Communications and Ville de Montréal will jointly contribute CAD14m ($13.3m) for the project.

The remaining CAD4.4m ($4.1m) will be paid by the borough, which will also be responsible for the operational costs.

This project is part of the Programme de rénovation, d’agrandissement et de construction des bibliothèques publiques de Montréal (RAC) de l’Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal.
