Initially BDP was commissioned to develop a masterplan to renovate the historic premises in Covent Garden and in Garrick Street by optimising the efficiency of various buildings and creating new facilities to support the activities of the club.
This masterplan was eventually developed into detailed design proposals which include improvements to access and circulation, providing disabled access to all floors, and improvements to the existing library, billiard room and function rooms.
It also includes creation of new private dining, bedroom and support facilities.
BDP derived the proposals from the substantial internal reordering of the buildings together with discreet extensions to the listed building within this sensitive conservation area.
Founded in 1831, the Garrick Club was named after the 18th-century actor David Garrick and has undergone minor renovations over the years.
The Club features a library that includes many manuscripts and documents, a collection of play-texts, theatrical portraits and drawings, playbills, and theatre programmes. The collection consists of 1,000 items, which was started by the actor Charles Mathews in the early 19th century.
It also counts many distinguished actors, lawyers and men of letters among its members.
The renovation work started on the site in early 2013.
