Who:
A graduate of the interior design degree at Kingston University, Ben Webb joined interior design practice Blacksheep in 2007 before leaving to launch his own practice. Earlier this year he won a competition run by Ege Carpets in association with FX to design a new carpet pattern. Current projects include a new London HQ for production house 40 Partners, designed in collaboration with creative agency 110 shapes, and a redevelopment of Tileyard Studios in London’s King’s Cross. Webb also works as a professional photographer.
Why:
Preferring to eschew a particular ‘look’ or designer ‘stamp’, Webb says he begins each new project with fresh eyes, viewing each client independently and allowing the design concept to drive the project. ‘I am interested in the simplicity and complexities of geometry and enjoy experimenting with this relationship, he says. ‘As a photographer I incorporate imagery into my designs as I feel this creates a stronger impact.’
Where:
In his role with Backsheep Webb took the lead in designing the interior of a branch of restaurant chain Nando’s in Ashford, Kent. The scheme featured distressed timber and metal finishes juxtaposed with contemporary furniture. The exterior space showcases a shop-front wrapped in a skin of diagonal timber strips and surrounded by iroko tables and rusted metal planters.
Working with furniture company NaughtOne, Webb created a new range of furniture for an up-and-coming coffee-shop brand, Artigiano. The furniture itself, made from a kit of parts, metal framework with blockboard top, is called the Construct range. ‘One element I am particularly happy with is the high bench table, which has proven very popular at the coffee shop,’ says Webb.
For this carpet design, Inverted Nature, which won a competition held in partnership with FX and Ege Carpets, Webb drew on the beauty and colours of nature. The pattern was inspired by the way in which the urban grid entangles nature, creating a unique interplay between the man-made and the natural worlds.
