With the invention digital cameras, camera phones and photo-sharing apps such as Instagram, more people than ever fancy themselves as photographers. But as these amazing pictures show, digital effects and instant image-capturing are no substitute for genuine skill and a mastery of the art of photography.
Buildings in Use: Jim Stephenson, Glastonbury
These stunning photographs are the winning entries in the The Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards, and as such were judged by some of architecture’s keenest eyes – Zaha Hadid, Ivan Harbour, Catherine Slessor, Eva Jiricna and Graham Stirk.

The nine shortlisted photographs – which include Ken Schluchtmann’s winning picture of ‘Nasjonale Turistveger’ Trollstigen in Norway -go on show this week at the showroom of building products company Sto, a three storey renovated factory in the heart of Clerkenwell.
This is just the second year that the competition has been run by Arcaid Images, a photo-library specialising in images of the built world.

The exhibition opens this Friday 28 February and runs until 25 April 214.
