Created to promote and support creatives in the North of England, the festival brings together innovative artists, designers and makers from the top region of the country and beyond.
This years’ theme is material matters. Without further ado here is our list of what not to miss at the festival.
Aurora
Giles Miller for Broomhill Sculpture Park detail
Giles Miller Studio will unveil a new installation which specialises in the development of innovative sculptural works and architectural works. The installation will include award-winning projects for Stella McCartney, the Design Museum and the V&A.
Unforsaken
Unforsaken by Jimmy Turrell
Graphic designer and director, Jimmy Turrell, has worked with Adidas, Beck, The Guardian, Miguel and the New York Times, so we can’t wait to see his new exhibition at NDF.
Daniel Schofield
Dan Schofield – mag tables credit oskar proctor
Elle Decoration British Design Award-winner, Daniel Schofield will have a solo exhibition at the festival. He has worked with the likes of Benchmark, Scandium and Conran.
New Boosbeck
New Boosbeck Industries chair
Design with a difference, New Boosbeck is furniture created in collaboration with community groups from social enterprise. The collaboration was inspired by the iconic 1930s initiative that aimed to address unemployment through creativity.
Material Matters
Bringing the best in interior design, graphic design, fashion, surface design, product design and photography from Newcastle College students and alumni, Material Matters is a must see.
Design NOW
This one-day symposium will launch the festival. Leading designers and creatives will gather in the North East to listen to speakers including graphic artist, printmaker and designer Anthony Burrill, whose work is held in the V&A and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and graphic designer, writer and speaker with expertise in multi-sensory typography Sarah Hyndman and many more.
Design Source
A new addition to the 2017 festival, Design Source is a curated selling exhibition offering the best furniture, product, textiles, wallpaper lighting, ceramics and jewellery from across the North of England.
The 2017 Northern Design Festival takes place from 3-8 November at venues across Newcastle and Gateshead, including the historic Assembly House as the Festival hub where most exhibitions are held, and nearby Cooper’s Studios.
