says Annette Bielesch
Design features in transportation for the wider public have taken a backseat for long enough. The exterior of Underground trains should be brought to life by being decorated by the best graffiti artists in the world. The stations and carriages could be a riot of colours with vinyl seating having prints of cartoon pages that put a smile on your face at any time of the day. Flat screens should be built into the walls and ceilings, playing – with the sound turned off – old Disney cartoons. The carriages should be wider to provide more seats, while still having enough space in the corridor for a double line of standing passengers not having to breathe down each other’s necks.
The Underground should be air-conditioned and have full broadband coverage. Acceleration and stops should be so smooth that holding on to an overhead handle becomes unnecessary. All Underground stations and trains should be user friendly for people with disabilities.
