says Nick Stringer Co-founder of Shed
We completed the Spencer Hart flagship in Brook Street last summer. It allowed us to indulge in all things mid-century modern and ‘Palm Springs’, exploring a vernacular which has always been the coolest on the planet. That world has always interested me and I’ve spent days searching out the Case Study Houses in Los Angeles. If you’ve managed to find the Eames House without some difficulty you’ve done well!
A dream project for me would be to build my own low-cost house. This is a design using simple materials with some simple, green building techniques, such as a vertical concrete brise-soleil ‘skin’, overhanging eaves and large feature roof canopy to provide both shade and to catch the wind for cooling. Despite spending very little on this fantasy home, one would obviously have to spend millions on a Hollywood Hills plot, putting this project firmly into the realms of ‘if only’.
