Middleton Arena is a high profile, multi-million pound project, boasting state-of-the-art facilities including a 500 seat theatre, fitness centre, dance studio, squash courts and 25 metre 6 lane swimming pool.

Architects BDP of Manchester required a façade solution that could provide durable long-term performance together with an attractive appearance to complement the contemporary design of the new building. 3000m² of Swistherm incorporating 100mm mineral wool insulation was specified for a number of dramatic rendered sections around the exterior of the arena. Using ST Silkolitt lightweight silicone render, the sections were finished in striking shades of yellow, purple, green and red to correspond with colour-coded areas inside the arena.

Careful specification of a sustainable building package, ensured that all environmental requirements of the Building Regulations were passed with ease, providing significant improvements on current benchmark standards.

Swistherm is a BBA approved, thin coat insulated render system, which can be finished in a choice of silicone or mineral-based topcoats. The system comprises insulation slabs, fixed directly to the substrate and finished with the appropriate render. Thermally efficient, wind and waterproof, Swistherm eliminates interstitial condensation and reduces energy consumption. Insulation slabs are available in a variety of materials including polystyrene, mineral wool or highly sustainable natural cork for environmentally sensitive applications.

The highly flexible system is available with a choice of two render finishes and over 400 colour and toning options. ST Silicone render is a high performance, stain resistant and water repellent material, with the ST Mineral render option providing a lightweight, natural alternative.

Swistherm at Middleton Arena was installed by approved contractors SLK of Castleford and main contractors on the project were Barr Construction of Paisley.
