As part of a three year refurbishment the building has undergone a full internal redecoration, including conversion of a ground floor meeting room into a state-of-the-art dance studio. With versatility, durability and safety of utmost importance for the room’s new dance floor, Caerphilly County Borough Council turned to the expertise, product knowledge and range of flooring solutions from Harlequin Floors.
World leader in advanced technology flooring for dance, Harlequin supplied 60m2 of its Harlequin Activity sprung floor system. Based on the ‘triple sandwich’ construction originated by the company over 30 years ago, it eliminates the need for metal springs and rubber pads and as it is a fully floating system with no fixings, it can be laid on almost any surface without preparation.
Shock-damped to avoid a ‘trampoline’ effect and providing area and point elasticity, it is an ‘industry standard’ choice with hundreds of installations worldwide. Specified with a maple hardwood surface, the system provided an ideal combination of aesthetics, flexibility and suitability to the demands of a wide range of dance styles.
With the building still in daily use, the application process had to be smooth and have a minimal effect on visitors and employees. By utilising its extensive industry experience, Harlequin ensured the client received a high quality dance floor and hassle-free application.
Originally opened as a single storey snooker hall in 1925, a further two floors were added to the BMI building in the 1930s to include a stage, auditorium, dance floor, library and rehearsal room. After falling into disrepair in the 1980s, the building was refurbished and reopened in 1992 as a community arts and entertainment venue.
With a versatile, high performance dance floor supplied and installed by Harlequin Floors, the former Blackwood Miners’ Institute can once again offer an exceptional dance rehearsal and performance space befitting of the venue, and suitable for the widest variety of performers.
