The new central London community will see the development of 2,000 houses, landscaped gardens, a riverside walk down to Battersea Park, a boutique hotel, bars, restaurants and 12,000 sq m of retail space. The American Embassy is due to relocate there in 2017.

The development of Nine Elms has been masterplanned by architect Sir Terry Farrell, who has described the area as ‘London’s third city’. Between Vauxhall and Battersea, Nine Elms is the final part of the development of the South Bank, and is the key element of the London Mayor’s development plan for the area. The Underground’s Northern line is to be extended to provide two new stations, and there are plans to provide a pedestrian bridge connecting Vauxhall and Pimlico.

Sir Terry Farrell said: ‘After the Square Mile to the east and Westminster to the west, the South Bank is central London’s Third City. At Nine Elms we have the opportunity to extend the ultural realm of the South Bank still further, creating a new urban quarter for London and unlocking the potential of the complete South Bank.

‘This is undoubtedly the most exciting new chapter in the story of London and quite possibly the last time the capital will see the creation of such a completely new district, built where none existed before.’
