The project would see the replacement of the entire school except the two gyms and the seismic upgrade of the Abbey Arts Centre. Around $1.5 million would be slated for the seismic construction. Two new sand-based fields will also be constructed after the school is completed.
The new school will be constructed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards. Those construction practices which promote water efficiency, energy conservation, and employ recycled, reused or renewable materials will be used.
Tom Louie, Abbotsford district facilities and transportation director, said that if approved, Abbotsford Collegiate would be designed by the same architectural firm, and have a similar look and feel to its feeder school, Abbotsford Middle School. It was designed by Craven Houston Powers Architects and features extensive use of natural light and ventilation, and organic materials such as polished concrete and wood. The use of geo-thermal heating and the capture of water and rainfall for use in the building are also planned.
It is expected that initial ground for the project can be broken in 2010 and will be ready for classes in September 2012.
