The board authorised an initial $70 million to partially fund the project in September 2012.
Terminal B renovation will include 24 new ticket counters, eight new departure lounges, new concession space, and a new baggage claim carousel. Part of the project will connect gates 37 and 38, currently used by Virgin America, with the rest of the terminal so passengers will have access to the food court and other concessions in Terminal B. The two-lane checkpoint for Gates 37 and 38 will be eliminated.
The project, which is expected to be completed in 2014, will also create a consolidated security checkpoint that will minimise wait times, and allow for future TSA Pre-Check passenger processing and new checked baggage inspection systems that will meet the latest TSA standards and protocols. It will be designed to meet Massport’s Sustainable Design Standards.
United Airlines, which currently operates out of Terminals A and C, will be housed in Terminal B, while JetBlue will remain in Terminal C.
