The park won the ‘Honor Award for Regional and Urban Design’ at the national convention and design exposition of AIA in San Francisco. The design to turn the old El Toro air base into a lush central park is a result of three years of work.
The collaborative design team included TEN Arquitectos and landscape architects Ken Smith Workshop West and Mia Lehrer + Associates. Fuscoe Engineering was the civil engineer and Green Shield Ecology was the urban ecologist. Buro Happold looked after the sustainability and structural engineering while Gafcon was the design administrator of the project. Mary Miss Studio was also a part of the team.
Slated to spread over 500 acres, construction of phase one of the $61 million park will begin in mid 2009.
Millions of dollars have been spent to envision a modern, eco-friendly project which would retain the military and agricultural past of the area. The park provides entertainment and sports amenities to the visitors.
The Great Park Design Studio has received half a dozen awards for environmental sustainability, alternative transportation and food production since it started the project in 2006.
