The students built a structure that is beautiful, practical and sustainable, and not just a standard pre-fabricated building. The two-level structure has been built of reclaimed redwood. The structure with a customized desk, storage and shelving system, not only met the need for office space, but also created a secondary space that offered a lounge area for the family.
The best construction, insulation, lighting and other materials were chosen to suit the site, with sustainability embedded into all the aspects of the structure. Using the precision environment of their workshop to build the structure, waste was reduced to approximately an inch for every 12 feet of materials used.
Sustainable prefabricated design techniques have been utilized throughout. Upon completion of factory-built elements, the structure was simply planted in the owner’s yard. Some of the reclaimed material used in the construction are recycled denim insulation, reclaimed redwood siding, aluminium frame window units and copper roof panels.
