Made of aluminium, steel and monochromatic LED the sculpture, called ‘Fragment’, is an inverted pyramid composed of 421 octahedron frames and suspended in a day-lit atrium, catching and reflecting light downwards into space.

Commissioned as part of Shed Design‘s architectural scheme for the 9,000 sq m shoe emporium at the Dubai Mall, the sculpture is designed to channel light from the building’s glass ceiling.

Ben Kreukniet of London-based United Visual Artists describes the work as ‘experimenting with formal minimalist geometries to see how light can be used as a tangible, controllable material’.

UVA will be exhibiting more light-related work at the Design Days fair in Dubai, with Gazelli Art House, 18-21 March 2013
