The Okehampton Rural Business Centre in West Devon, UK, was also highly commended in the category of ‘Best Eco Building’. The center achieved a BREEAM-Excellent rating for its sustainable design in the award ceremony held on July 5, 2009 in Cornwall, UK. The center was honoured in the ‘above GBP3 million’ ($4.8 million approx.) projects category.
The business center designed by Archial for West Devon Borough Council and completed in 2008, was commended for complementing the surrounding landscape whilst providing a practical and energy-efficient working environment.
A number of green design elements have enabled the project to save an estimated 50 tons of carbon emissions. Among these, Archial was tasked with providing natural daylight, natural ventilation, energy generation from renewable sources, energy-efficient lighting and controls, cycling facilities and a green travel plan, and facilities to harvest and reuse rainwater.
The business center comprises a range of managed business units, aimed at providing young companies opportunities to grow in a flexible working environment.
