British artist Mark Titchner, who was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2006, will exhibit work at the new flagship Foyles bookshop in London’s Charing Cross Road when it opens in June 2014.
Titchner, whose work often involves slogans such as ‘More Joy Now!’ and ‘We Will Not Follow, We Will not Lead,’ will create new site-specific work for a 1,300 sq ft exhibition space on the fifth floor of the eight-story building.
Titchner’s new work will relate to the history of the building, which was previously home to Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design.
Foyles has appointed culture and placemaking consultancy Futurecity lead curator and gallery director of the exhibition space, which will be on the fifth floor of the bookshop.
The exhibition space will share a floor with a cafe operated by independent catering company, Leafi, which already operates in a number of arts and heritage sites including the Whitechapel Gallery and Turner Contemporary in Margate.

The building has been re-designed by architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands as ‘a bookshop for the 21st century’, spread across eight alternating foot-plates over four floors, with a full height central atrium. Both the gallery and the new Café at Foyles, also around 1,300 sq ft in size, have been designed by lustedgreen, the interior specialists behind Foyles London Waterloo Station and Foyles Westfield Stratford City.
Titchner, a graduate of Central Saint Martins, describes his varied art practice as being ‘a dialogue about how you receive thought and ideas’.
His work will be on show in from 24 June.
