Lynden Airport, formerly known as Nassau International Airport, is the largest airport in the Bahamas, and the largest international gateway into the country. On September 17, 2007, the redevelopment plan was unveiled highlighting the creation of new terminals and technology which would make the Lynden Airport the most efficient in the Bahamas/Caribbean region.
The $256 million project at the airport involves renovation and creation of new facilities. New washrooms are constructed, along with giving upgrades to the existing washrooms. Phase one of the project is expected to be completed by early 2011.
The airport has received roof repairs and new baggage systems. Fully integrated baggage handling, sortation, and explosive detection system are installed at the airport. The terminal features a 1,800 bag per hour inline, explosive detection system, bag-weight imaging system, and automated baggage sortation with three large makeup carousels measuring 3,500 linear feet and about 300 drives.
The new domestic and international departure terminals are scheduled for completion by late 2013.
