Creating a more open-plan learning environment, the refurbishment work of the 10-storey, 1970-built teaching block includes replacing windows; cleaning the concrete façade; and upgrading plant and services.
Muffling equipment will be used during the refurbishment work. A noise charter has been developed to ensure minimal disruption to users elsewhere in the building. The renovation work will start at a time with three floors, while the others floors are in use.
The refurbishment aims at providing the 50-year building a new life for a further 40 years. Users of the finished building include the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences, pool teaching and administration.
DTZ is providing project management and lead design services and Arup is providing mechanical, electrical and structural engineering services. BAM plant will provide small plant and undertake lighting and small power throughout the scheme.
The renovation work will start on site on 17 June 2013, with completion scheduled for 29 October 2014.
