Pursuant to the contract, the company will develop a new 13,000 square metres facility. It will be a three-storey building that will accommodate renal dialysis and dental and x-ray departments. The new annexure will also house an education centre for Health Board staff, postgraduate and undergraduate doctors.
The scheme will incorporate host of green elements and is being aspired to achieve BREEAM Excellent rating. The green credentials of the building will consist of photovoltaic solar panels on the roof that will generate green power to offset certain percentage of the electricity requirement of the hospital. Additional power requirement will be met by means of a combined heat and power system. The building will also use modular services.
The Morriston hospital expansion project forms an integral part of the Welsh Health Estate Designed for Life Framework. Construction of the hospital will involve an outlay of £40 million ($64.29 million). The building is expected to complete in the third quarter of 2014.
