Estimated to cost $8.5 million, the renovation process will replace outdated mechanical systems, such as heating, air conditioning, electrical and lighting, plumbing and fire protection, most of which date back to the original construction of the building in 1978.

Retaining its current footprint, the entire space of the library will be renovated. The renovated library will have a completely re-imagined interior by making the best use of the available space.

By taking care of the needs of the visitors, the library will create a comfortable Internet café environment. A drive-up materials return box will be placed on the east end of the parking lot, providing convenience and improved safety in the library’s entrance way.

The library’s interior will feature open floor plans to provide improved seating, and windows with views of surrounding park areas. The reading commons overlooking the library’s atrium will be featured on the second floor.

The renovated library will provide more work and meeting space for business persons, students and groups of all kinds. It will create an ‘office away from home’ atmosphere with work pods in a fully-equipped business centre.

Additionally, it will also feature a variety of study/meeting rooms. The business centre area will be located right next to an expanded technology centre, including a state-of-the-art media lab.

Taking care of the safety and convenience of the children, the entire department will be relocated to the first floor of the library. The move also combines children’s DVDs and music with adult popular materials.

To encourage interactive learning and imaginative play, the entire Youth Services area will be redesigned as a colourful, comfortable and welcoming environment. Apart from that it will also feature a creation lab and interactive exhibits for the children and their families.

For teens and young adults, the renovation will provide a warmer atmosphere with booth-style seating, a media lab and gaming room on the second floor.

Nearby will be the new reading commons with a variety of comfortable seating options that can accommodate individuals, groups and even small library programs. Books and reference services for adults will find a new home on the second floor as well.

In April 2013, the library will start the renovation work, which is estimated to take one year to complete the project.
