The 6,500-seat stadium was renovated in two phases. Phase one included the installation of AstroTurf, the scoreboard and lighting. Phase two involves the upgrade of Maddox Track, additional bleacher seats, a concession and restroom facility and the remodeling of the Fitness Plus Center as locker rooms.
The track is currently being revamped to meet National Collegiate Athletic Association standards. Demolition of Memorial Gym to build the concession and restroom building is expected in March 2011.
Brasfield & Gorrie was the stadium contractor for the project. The stadium’s renovation was funded by 2009 special purpose, local option sales tax package that contains $3,369,000 for renovating and improving the stadium complex.
Barron Stadium is part of the West Third Street Complex along with Memorial Gym, Fitness Plus Sports and Fitness Center, John Maddox Track, Gymnastics Center and a 16 court Tennis Center and skateboarding/in-line skating areas. The complex hosts Shorter Hawks and Rome Wolves Football and Track events, Peach State Band Festival, Rome Relays Invitational Track Meet, and sanctioned Tennis Tournaments.
