The two new buildings spanning 70,000 square meters will be located on the university’s Jiangning Campus. These buildings are the first on the campus by a foreign architect. The administrative building will also feature a museum and conference auditoria.
BDP’s design presents a strong architectural form that unites the two new buildings, and responds to the landscape setting of the campus masterplan, providing a dramatic symbol for the Jiangning Campus.
Sustainable design principles are also integrated into the building by BDP. The buildings are designed to respond to the specific climatic conditions of Jiangsu province while providing opportunities for students, staff and visitors to enjoy access to internal or external landscaped spaces throughout the year.
BDP beat competition from Architectural Design Institute of Zhejiang University from Hangzhou and Christian de Portzamparc from Paris to land this win. Following design presentations by each of the three shortlisted practices, BDP was awarded the commission by a unanimous vote of the presentation jury. BDP’s appointment is to develop the project to the end of detailed design. The project is due to start on site in early 2011.
