The new 3,600 square feet house is located in an established Nassau County beach community. The principal materials used in the construction and design are stone, stucco, steel and glass. The relatively closed façade provides privacy from the street, while the main living area opens to the side garden. A roof terrace offers panoramic ocean views.
The house has been designed to fit well into the surrounding areas, which are filled with modest houses from the 1920’s and 30’s in Tudor, Spanish and Art Deco styles. New York-based Belmont Freeman Architects has tried to slot in a distinctly modern house into the village context, which will be respectful of the scale and architectural traditions of the community.
The house has a compact footprint at the north edge of the 85ft square lot preserving a wide side garden with mature trees. In terms of the selective use of materials and form, the house evokes the village’s Art Deco heritage.
In an attempt to ensure privacy, the street façade is designed to be virtually blank. The principal rooms are open onto the garden to the south. The ground floor features an open plan promoting casual living and maximum connection to the outdoors.
In the second floor, a hallway with continuous skylight leads to four bedrooms and three baths. A sun room / guest suite is located on the third floor and opens onto a large roof terrace that offers views onto the ocean.
