Biomedicum is conceived as an extension of the Karolinska Institute, one of the largest medical universities in Europe. Four companies were invited to participate in the competition in 2010.
The main concept in the competition proposal by C. F. Møller Architects | Berg Arkitektkontor is to create a new building which is more than a house in the campus park. This is achieved by a glass covered main thoroughfare through the Biomedicum, linking the Karolinska Institute with the university hospital and the city and making the Biomedicum a new and important focal point in the area. The winner of the Biomedicum competition is expected to be announced by mid-2011.
Karolinska Institute requires additional laboratory facilities and better utilisation of the existing facilities due to an increase in experimental research. The task will furthermore be to create a work environment optimising and supporting interdisciplinary work, this will amongst other things be done by connecting the Karolionska Institute closely with the new university hospital in the area: Nya Karolinska Solna (NKS).
The other participating companies were AIX (SE), Nyréns Arkitektkontor (SE), and Sweco (SE). C. F. Møller | Berg (DK/SE) and Nyréns Arkitektkontor have both been selected for the second phase in which the firms work togetherr with the Karolinska Institute to prepare the final zoning plan as well as the final Biomedicum project.
C. F. Møller Architects recently won the competition for another large laboratory building: the expansion of the Panum Complex at the University of Copenhagen, including a research tower housing Denmark’s most energy-efficient laboratory facilities.
