Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the station is designed to function as the link between two distinct areas of the city of Leige. The project does not feature any façade in the traditional sense. The interaction between the interior and the exterior is seamless and the monumental vault becomes the façade.
The station features vast glass roof encases and exposed working platforms. The transparency of the design is intended to complement dynamism of the moving ensemble of passengers and trains.
The project was originally commissioned in 1996. Calatrava has been successful in replacing the existing station without interrupting train service. About 13 years have gone into its making.
The facility designed to meet the demands of high-speed travel is billed as the ‘epicenter of the North European High Speed Network’. The station is expected to be the new pulse of the former industrial city.
