Capita Symonds has been appointed by the UK-based maintenance and building group Interserve to provide multiple services at the £27 million ($42.6 million) Paediatrics, Acute & Critical Care extension at Kettering General Hospital.

Capita Symonds has designed a variety of sustainable features for the facility designed to achieve a BREEAM `Excellent` rating. The sustainability features include Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) which will provide low carbon heating and cooling and a 150kW woodchip Biomass boiler which will generate carbon-neutral energy.

The project, which forms a part of the ProCure21 framework, will involve improvement and relocation of the hospital’s intensive care facilities and children’s wards into a purpose-built three-storey unit. The facilities include an intensive care unit with 16 beds and two isolation rooms, and an integrated paediatric unit with a total of 32 beds including surgical and medical wards, a paediatric assessment unit and high-dependency facilities.

Work is due to begin on site this month with completion scheduled for mid-2012.
