Designed by Pittsburg-based Edge Studios in association with Virginia-based Evolve Architecture, the renovated East Liberty branch of CLP features a 9,000 square feet addition. This addition is designed to bring all library services on the first floor, including the children’s, teen, and adult sections. The library features two main entrances for both parking lot and pedestrian access. Comfortable reading and study spaces are integrated into the building.

The second floor will consist of three meeting rooms, which will accommodate the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council’s tutoring sessions. The basement will house the library’s Heritage Collection, including documents dating as far back as 1617.

Edge Studios has used zinc panel throughout the space. With its depth and texture, the panels help in enhancing the visual appeal of the structure. The architects have also created a new atrium that expands the interior. Lighting fixtures hung at different levels helps in sectionalizing the first floor space.

The building is designed to achieve LEED certification. The facility is installed with efficient water fixtures and modern window and heating systems that will make it energy-efficient.

The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is the public library system in Pittsburgh. Its main branch is located in the Oakland neighborhood, and it has 19 branch locations throughout the city. The renovation and expansion project is a part of Carnegie Library’s Capital Improvement Program, which aims to refurbish or replace outdated libraries in various Pittsburgh communities.
