The installation of the walkalator is estimated to cost $1.4 million. It will connect the aerobridges, allowing passengers to reach the aircraft, thereby reducing walking distance for travelers.
The new installation will enhance passenger amenities and further emphasize optimum use of airport infrastructure. Five aerobridges will be installed in the international terminal and three in the domestic terminal. Passengers using the new bus lounge inside the passenger terminal will find the walkalator useful.
The installation process would be carried out in phases, wherein the first unit is expected to be open by mid August. The machines will be installed in small stretches along the 300 meter connecting corridor between terminals so that all aerobridges can be used throughout the day.
Three to two walkalators of approximately 48, 24 and 30 meter length will be integrated. Private airports may develop its facilities in the future.
GMR is also planning to install walkalators in its terminal building, connecting 74 aerobridges at the Delhi airport.
