The design of the facility has been conceived by Roger Stephenson Architects with Sir Robert McAlpine serving as the contractor. The building comprises teaching and practice rooms which are made sound proof with installation of two concrete floors separated by rubber jacks. It also sports a recital hall with a seat capacity of 100 for public performances.

The new facility is characterised by narrow windows on the stairways which is reminiscent of its medieval history, and an exterior made of handmade bricks. Use of bricks and small windows help reduce noise transfer inside the school, inspite of its proximity to a busy bus route and rail station.

Construction of the building has been financed through various sources, with the main funds contributed by the Department of Education, and North West Development Agency. Other sources include The Monument Trust, The Oglesby Charitable Trust, The Garfield Weston Foundation, The Foyle Foundation, Carole Nash, and The Wolfson Foundation.
