The project, which will be done in two phases, involves improving the seating and sightlines, renovating the mosaic walls of the theater, and construction of a new glass-and-bronze canopy. The renovation project also includes arabesque ceilings and plasterwork.
The renovation project will re-establish the original box-office lobby, restore the mezzanine lobby, and redesign and expand the street-level lobby. The project will add a new patrons’ lounge and increase the number of restrooms.
The auditorium will be handicapped-accessible and feature a new sprung stage floor suitable for dance. The dressing rooms will be refurbished and there will also be new theatrical support systems.
The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission will have to give approval for the exterior alterations of the City Center as it is a landmark.
The first phase will start from April 2010 and end in September 2010, while the second phase will start from March 2011 and is slated for October 2011 completion.
