This is the first joint project of the designer duo. Through Collider, they have attempted to refer to the positive effects of artistic collaboration and networks of ideas which lead to unexpected conclusions.
Musson and Retallick have designed Collider, taking inspiration from neural systems responding to electrical signals and mycelia, an intricate fungal network spreading nutrients across vast areas. The installation is made of various undulating sculptural shapes, referencing the silent communication between birds in flight.
To convey the energy and power inherent in collaborative thought processes, the designers collaborated with Applelec who manufactured the bespoke lighting unit called LED Light Sheet for the project. LED Light Sheet is more commonly used for retail displays and to backlight decorative materials.
According to Musson, Applelec was willing to explore new possibilities for its product. He added that LED Light Sheet was found to be an ideal material to relay their concept as light is a metaphor for new ideas, which relates directly to the aims of 100% Design. LED Light Sheet also offered the delicate translucent quality.
