Organised by Coniston Cricket Club with the Coniston Institute and Grizedale Arts, the competition was open to all architects and had six major goals. The redesigned pavilion should replace the existing decrepit pavilion; create an exemplar building that makes full use of its location and context; promote a community involvement in the design and build; make the process broadly educative in terms of the project and the wider village built environment; create a multi-use space able to generate its own income; and sustain and develop sports and tourism in the village.

The current cricket ground is part of a shared area of playing fields including Bowls and Tennis clubs. The land is leased from the Coniston Institute under a 25-year arrangement. The Cricket club approached Grizedale Arts to assist in the development of a new multi-purpose building on a site that is said to be one of the most visually stunning in the UK, being situated at the dramatic foot of the Coniston fells.

From the submission, three designers will be selected and invited to develop second stage designs, post which, a design team will be selected for the project. Over 83 submissions have been received for the competition with entries from Malaysia, Germany, India, Spain, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates.

Love Architecture 2013 will be held from 21-30 June.
