Designed by Norway-based Snohetta along with Aberdeen firm Halliday Fraser Munro, the new centre is being built at Forester Hospital in Aberdeen. The new cancer centre will be a single-storey building, which will have a curved form, with a hard concrete exterior and a soft timber interior.
The centre will have its own courtyard garden with a cherry tree at the centre. The design of the building will mimic a pavilion, which will be set in a parkland setting. The building will have a mezzanine level, which will accommodate office spaces. At the entrance of the building, a group of Beech trees will be planted, which will strike a contrast in terms of colour and texture to the existing trees.
Construction work on the project will span for 40 weeks, with completion slated by June 2013. The scheme is being funded by means of a fundraising campaign by Maggie’s and the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation (EMF).
