The design and construction of the railway station included renewal of platforms, overhead line equipment, canopies and unobstructed sea views through a glass wall. Other additions to the development include a covered walkway and a redesigned car park and Station Road. There will now be space for an additional 47 vehicles on a site to the south of the building.
The project also replaced the north and south boundary walls to allow unobstructed views of the waterfront area. In addition, improvements to the sea defence wall and demolition of redundant buildings at the station were also completed.
The new station features improved facilities for passengers at Gourock and allow for better integration of road, rail and ferry links. Construction work was aimed at accommodating future refurbishments of the waterfront area.
The project was led by Network Rail and undertaken by Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering. It took two years to complete.
