Being developed by Muse Developments in partnership with Reading Borough Council at the western end of the town centre, the Chatham Place scheme is a major part of the Council’s ‘Reading City 2020’ vision.
Upon completion, the final phase will offer 184 one-, two- and three-bed apartments, which will be split over two buildings of nine and nineteen-storeys. Apart from that the final phase will also include ground floor retail opportunities and a public urban garden.
The construction work is being carried out by Galliford Try, and is due to be completed before Christmas 2014.
The overall Chatham Place scheme will create a comprehensive public realm and landscape strategy which will improve and refurbish all principle routes and linkages into the Town Centre from the Chatham Place Quarter; facilitate public transport accessibility by enhancing permeability through the site; create linked pedestrianised landscaped squares and streets which complete the existing routes and spaces at Alfred Street and Chatham Place; and deliver 100 bicycle storage places and prioritise cycle movements.
The building frontages will enhance the quality of new and existing public realm while public art will give individual character to the development. Efficient and sustainable lighting strategies will be used to minimise environmental damage and encourage clear navigation.
