To be constructed on the site of the former North London Line station, the new station will accommodate a new ticket hall. Interchanged with the Docklands Light Railway, the station will offer a step-free access between the platforms and street level. The station will feature a transparent roof, made up of transparent plastic EFTE.

The new station will be a prefabricated building, which will save more time and minimise the disruption to the residents, DLR services and the nearby ExCeL London. The building will be largely manufactured off site at a facility of Laing O’Rourke located near Sheffield. The sections will then be transported to Custom House and re-assembled.

Construction on the project will start from January 2013. Main construction of the new station will be undertaken by Laing O’Rourke Construction Ltd. Work on the site is scheduled to finish in December 2015.

The overall Crossrail project involves development of a new rail link, which will pass through 37 stations and run 118 km from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west, through new twin-bore 21 km tunnels below central London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.
