Combining efficient functionality with stunning architecture, the design of new stadium is influenced by climate, geography, history of important civic structures and technology of Minneapolis. With an open and sleek geometric exterior, the new stadium will feature a soaring prow, the largest transparent roof in the world; and operable doors that open to the downtown skyline.

The design has retained the recent pattern of modern and progressive physical form of Minnesota in the facility, beginning with the roof, which features ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) on its southern portion. Its transparent character will impart a feeling of sitting outside without being exposed to the elements.

Sustainable characteristics have been incorporated in the design to reduce operating costs in winter and summer. Constructed according to Minnesota’s snow-loading climatic conditions, the stadium’s sloped roof is touted as the most efficient roof structure in the US.

The new stadium can accommodate 65,000 people and will be capable of hosting more events than any other large stadium in the world.

Construction is expected to begin in October 2013 with the stadium scheduled to open in time for the Vikings 2016 season. Demolition of the Metrodome will begin in early 2014.

The design package is subject to the approval of the Minneapolis Stadium Implementation Committee and the city of Minneapolis.
