Designs were drawn up to replace the existing pod of rooms that was gutted down in an arson fire in July 2010. The two-storey classroom building will be J-shaped and will be equipped with automatic fire sprinklers and remotely monitored smoke and fire detectors.

The Spanish-style building with tile will feature a terra cotta look and will include more playground space. Spanning 28,618 square feet, the designs feature 18 classrooms including a computer lab, two student restrooms, three staff restrooms, a library/media center, two janitorial rooms and two storage rooms.

The gutted classrooms were demolished and the remaining concrete pad and brick columns will be demolished starting June 5, 2011. The concrete from the foundation will be crushed and used as base rock.

The project is estimated to cost $7.9 million. Santa Clara-based Swinerton Builders is undertaking the project. The construction is expected to begin in June 2011 and slated to be completed by July 2012.
