Recent research by the HSE shows that nearly 1 in 3 construction refurbishment sites inspected put the lives of workers at risk. Forrester went on to say: “The simple fact is that despite knowing what they should be doing, too many people are prepared to allow bad practices to continue, even though the risks are clear. By using an AIS member company, clients can be assured they are employing a legitimate outfit with a good track record.”

Stephen Williams, HSE Head of Construction recently said: “My advice to those who work in the refurbishment sector is to plan work, use competent workers and if working at height use the right equipment and use it safely”. Forrester agrees: “AIS contractor member companies are regularly vetted, use RIBA-accredited site guides for the installation of products, have access to helplines on health and safety, legislation and best practice, and many use the AIS Health & Safety Handbook to give to all employees – all these help to make a safer working environment, minimise risk, and reduce potential costs and litigation. In addition many AIS member company’s workers hold CSCS cards. We are working to alert clients and insurers to the clear benefits of using AIS members.”

Work at height remains a big concern for AIS. The Association welcomes the Secretary of State’s decision to hold a construction forum to discuss safety standards in the construction industry, and is working with the HSE to target falls and trips in the refurbishment sector as part of their ongoing work.
