The design and architectural solution of the project includes the development of the larger Verkh-Isetsky pond district. A new subway and train station connecting the site with the Koltsovo Airport and other areas of the city, as well as accommodation facilities, parks, shopping and entertainment centers are all part of the larger vision for the Ekaterinburg World Expo 2020 for long-term growth. The new changes will be introduced with a minimal level of impact on the city’s residents.

The chosen site in Ekaterinburg is one of the largest event spaces in terms of surface area in the history of World Expo. According to the master plan, 182 hectares of the overall area will be used for the construction of expo pavilions. The rest of the area will be reserved for living accommodations, commercial construction (offices, restaurants and shopping centers), recreation zones, parks and parking lots. A territory of 23 hectares will become a waterfront recreation zone, and an area of more than 42 hectares will be converted to city parks and modern avenues.

Situated approximately 20 km from the airport near lake Verkh-Istetsky, the chosen exhibition center is a waterfront setting and will be built from the ground up. Plans for the site also include vast urban development planning within Ekaterinburg, in line with the city’s urban development project through 2020. In addition to updated ground transportation, passenger boats will be offered during the summer period around the site, providing an opportunity for visitors to observe the Expo site from water.

The overall concept has been approved by experts and authorities. The site is chosen for its close access to the planned recreational zone as well as its ability to provide a high level of comfort and functionality for participants and visitors of World Expo 2020. More than 200,000 visitors per day from 175 countries are expected to take part in the World Expo 2020.

If Ekaterinburg wins the rights to hold the World Expo 2020, the selected facilities would be completed by 2018, making them useful during the FIFA World Championship. The construction activities will start in 2014 and will be carried out in collaboration with various Russian and international design and construction companies. More than 200,000 visitors per day from 175 countries are expected to take part in World Expo 2020.
